General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) John Boadu has lashed out at former president John Dramani Mahama for recent pronouncements against the Akufo-Addo-led government.
“The President’s sterling management of Covid-19 has opened the space for former president to move around easily,” he told journalists in Accra on Friday, September 10.
“I think that has been the point that the first thing he ought to have done was to commend H.E Nana Akufo-Addo for managing the pandemic with such sterling qualities and that has led to us being able to move around including himself being able to tour the country.”
He cited countries like Germany, UK, US, Australia and India, where opposition candidates have been restricted as a result of the pandemic.
“But in Ghana because of the sterling performance of the management of Covid-19, our former president is able to go round.”
Mr Mahama began his Thank You tour in August, meeting party supporters in the Upper East, Upper West, Northern, North-East and Savannah regions.
But Mr Boadu said those comments were “distasteful”.
“It is a distasteful comment that does not belong in our fast-maturing electoral democracy,” he said.
He added: “We know that John Mahama stubbornly refuses to retract. Rather, he is seeking refuge in semantics and grammar. He is struggling to explain the impossibility.
“However, we are not surprised. Being in opposition and desperate to come back to power, John Mahama must be panicking at the pace at which the Akufo-Addo government is moving.”
